NETTLES FAMILY HISTORY

How we all got here...

I am still trying to find out where the Nettles came from before coming to Nassau County, Florida. I have found a George Nettles (born about 1802) and a John Nettles (born about 1808) living in Nassau County also, but I haven't been able to connect them to Henry David Nettles yet. George & John ( who I believe were brothers) lived in Fernandina, Florida (Nassau County), while Henry lived in Boulogne, Florida. (Nassau County)
According to Census Records, Henry was not George or John Nettles' son. George & John Nettles came from South Carolina to Florida while Florida was still under Spanish rule. I really believe that my Henry Nettles will connect to George & John Nettles somehow, but have not been able to find any proof.

I have found that Henry's mother was Mary Nettles,(haven't found her maiden name yet) born about 1820. Something happened to Henry's natural father sometime between 1843 (when Henry was born) and 1847 (when Mary Nettles remarried to a Burris Brewer.) I wonder if Henry's father was a brother to George & John, or maybe he was their son? Still desperately trying to find Henry David Nettles' father!

Hello....Meet my Great-Great grandfather............

                          "HENRY DAVID NETTLES
Henry David Nettles was born in Nassau County Florida on January 06, 1843 to Mary & Unknown Nettles. Henry's father passed away sometime before Henry was 4 years old and on December 15, 1847, his mother Mary remarried, Burris Brewer. Henry was living in Camden County, Georgia in 1850 at the age of 7 with his mother & step father. Later the family moved back to Nassau County. On May 8, 1856, Land Deeds show where Burris Brewer purchased land from John Nettles.

During the "Civil War", at the age of 18 , Henry enlisted in the Confederate States Army on October 20, 1861. He enlisted in Jacksonville, Fla. in Company B First Florida Regiment Cavalry under Captain John Haddock. Later, in 1862, Henry was dismounted as Infantry.

On November 23, 1863, Henry was captured at "The Battle of Missionary Ridge", near Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was cut off by the Union Army, which resulted in his capture. General Maxwell was in command of Henry's Regiment and Brigade on this day and was also captured.

Henry was transported to "Rock Island Prison Camp" in Illinois by the Federals where he remained until May 03, 1865. Upon his release from Rock Island, Henry was carried down the Mississippi River to Naches Mississippi where he was exchanged and surrendered by the Confederate officer and paroled by the Federal officer. In June of 1865, Henry finally made it home to Nassau County Florida where he met his pretty bride, "Miss Sarah Colson".
